Scuba dying

July 12, 2011

We went out to see the Great Barrier Reef for about eight hours today. It wasn’t necessarily better or worse than what I expected, just different. I got talked into scuba diving, which ended up being a total downer for me. I snorkeled first just be sure I got the hang of swimming in the ocean and breathing underwater, neither of which were nearly as difficult as I thought they would be. There seemed to be a general consensus that it was awesome, and all of my roommates raved about it, so I was really pumped by the time it was my turn. However, the pressure in my ears was more painful than any airplane flight I’ve ever taken, and after three failed attempts at getting my ears to pop, I called it quits. I felt like such a failure, but at least I got my $70 back.

I loved wearing flippers!

I also solved the mystery of my disappearing internet minutes. Well, technically someone else did. Apparently it costs $1 for a block of 15 minutes regardless of whether any are left unused, similar to how phone companies charge for a full minute even if it only took one second. So I unknowingly wasted about 30 minutes and am now out of internet time until I get to Townsville, which luckily is tomorrow.
Speaking of tomorrow, I am so excited to meet Jane! My internet ran out as soon as I finished responding to my mom’s e-mail, so I didn’t get to send her a follow up message. Hopefully we’ve Skyped and seen enough pictures of each other to recognize one another, but it still makes me nervous trying to meet without a phone or internet.
