Monday I ran into the guy from Ecuador again. He asked me if I do "that” in my country. When I looked confused he explained, "In my country we give a hug and a kiss when we say hello.” I tried to decline politely by telling him that people in the U.S. weren’t very touchy-feely, but it was still awkward.
| My apple pie had a nice "ring" to it. |
Wednesday at my Gods, Myths, and Cults tutorial we created our own cults. My group predicted the apocalypse when Facebook ended and claimed that the only way to survive was to join the Family. Those who joined the Family were promised more friends, but those who left would be banned from ever using Facebook again. After that, I went to the optional essay writing workshop for my environmental science class, hoping to gain brownie points with the tutor--or at least get some motivation to start writing. Only six people stayed for the practice paragraph, so we divided into two groups of three and the other girls in my group agreed we should work together in the future. I’m hoping that this combined with looking up the task online ahead of time will help me be more successful.
Thursday I didn’t get to spend any time with Jane between classes because her room had flooded and she had to get home to meet the plumber. I was pressed for time anyway, so I didn’t mind going back to my dorm before my geology practical, which was pretty straightforward but tedious and time consuming. Luckily a random guy offered to be my partner and this sped up the process of identifying and describing about 20 different minerals. That night, after more than a month of messaging, I Skyped Andrew for the first time and we are now attempting long distance.
Saturday I Skyped a friend from home, then went to the beach with Jane and Clair. When I got back I considered studying but opted instead to go over to Holly’s with Stephanie around 7 p.m. where we watched Kung Fu Panda 2 and Mean Girls 2.
| There was a "culture fest" going on nearby. |
Sunday was more productive; after I got back from the Farmers’ Market and Skyped my brother, I tried to draw a female model on poster board for a Youth, Identity, and Popular Culture project. Following dinner Stephanie and I also attempted to make my vegan brownies gluten-free for a girl on her floor. I deemed the experiment a half success, because despite being really crumbly, everyone who tried one agreed that they were really tasty.
