Ups and downs

September 4, 2011
Monday morning the internet stopped working in our dorm, so I spent the majority of the day camped out at the library. Of course this foiled my plan to Skype my parents and wish my dad a happy birthday, so after rushing around frantically to find a wi-fi spot, I only got to talk to them for a half hour because my computer died. When I got back to my dorm I had to go to the office because my key card stopped working for the third time. I asked the woman behind the desk if she knew why it keeps getting demagnetised, and she suggested that perhaps I have a magnetic personality.
Wednesday I entered a contest put on by the club that runs the free bus, contending that they should "fill my fridge” (and Stephanie’s) because they had failed to pick us up twice, and for some reason we were the only ones waiting for it both times. I also got my first package in the mail! Thursday Jane gave me a basil plant so I can attempt to grow my own, but based on my track record, I don’t have particularly high expectations.
Friday was extremely stressful because I had a poster presentation for my Youth, Identity, and Popular Culture class; this was only made worse by the fact that I had to choose between shoes that had a hole in the bottom and ones that gave me blisters. It wasn’t long before I regretted choosing the latter, but thankfully my partner lent me a pair of flip flops. After all my classes were over, I returned to my dorm so I could finally Skype Sarah and open the package she sent me. Inside I found a handmade card, her extra butterfly door decorations so I can be an "honorary resident” of her floor at WSU; crimson and gray streamers "so you remember where your true home is,” a bag of balloons, a couple bows, and a starburst wrapper chain as "a token of our friendship because I made myself sick eating them all!” At 4:45 I met up with Lian and Stephanie to take the free bus to the store and was informed that we won the "fill my fridge” contest for this week!

The lady who made us name tags forgot me.

Saturday I Skyped my parents so I could open the package they sent me (plus a card from my mom’s friend), which included a bookmark, gummy vitamins, seasoning, a really pretty tank top, and about 10 packs of gum. That night I went out to dinner at a Japanese restaurant called Gyo with Holly, Stephanie, and my RA (Lian was sick) to celebrate the end of Ramadan. The food was good but really expensive.

It's funny to think I used to hate eggplant.

Sunday for the first time I can remember we didn’t go to the Farmers’ Markets because Holly started a new job and had to work. Stephanie and I went to her dorm that night to watch a movie and meet her boyfriend, although he didn't show up until it was almost over because it was a really cheesy romance. Admittedly, I find these much more enjoyable to watch now that I have something similar happening in my own life.
