It's pronounced "Kehns"

We finally arrived in Cairns today after 18 hours of flight time and 6 hours worth of layovers. In addition to the 24 hours of traveling/waiting, we lost an entire day when we crossed the International Dateline. That’s okay, though, because I don’t like the number seven anyway. And coming back we will get home sooner than when we left. How crazy is that?

The view from the plane

The biggest hitch so far was the mini-meltdown I had about 22 hours before my first flight when I couldn’t find my packing list. But procrastination wasn’t the only (or even the main) reason I didn’t start packing until the day before. I only brought two suitcases and my purse, so anything worth taking was in use up until I left.
I also had a bout of car sickness on the way to the airport that almost made me lose my lunch, but I managed to overcome it and for once wasn’t ill leaving for my trip. (I would like to point out that this was without the help of Airborne, which I despise.)

Absolutely no Furbies allowed on the plane!

There are about 70 students in this particular session of AustraLearn, some who will stay in Cairns and others who will go to Townsville. James Cook University has multiple campuses just like WSU, so I should feel right at home!
The resort we are staying in is nice. We have to climb two flights of stairs to get to our room, which has four people in it, but it’s nothing compared to getting to the fifth floor of Streit every time the elevator broke. Plus, we actually have a sink in the room and a little deck with a sliding glass door that even has metal wire and a screen to keep out bugs and burglars.

  1. Not allowing Furbies makes complete sense. They are as creepy as the above photo of you holding a SNAKE! Seeing as I have a phobia of snakes, recently ran into four--one of them being extremely large--screamed louder than a little boy (which is much higher pitched than a girl), and nearly had a panic attack, it's now safe to assume that I am HYPER sensitive/aware to snakes and the possibility of them being around. But wow. That is one of the creepiest snake/eel things I have EVER SEEN.

P.S. Australia sounds absolutely beautiful (except for the blasted heat).
