Interference

July 17, 2011

I do most of my writing in the morning because I get too tired at night and usually just end up watching TV with everyone else until they go to bed. Birds wake me up around 7:30 every day anyway, though I can't tell how much of the noise is from the two that Jane's family owns and how much is from wild kookaburras. I only mean to write until everyone else gets up, but my timing isn't always the best and today I didn’t come out of my room for so long that I missed my opportunity to go the Sunday Markets because Jane’s family thought I was still sleeping. This made me feel exceptionally lazy, but at least I got to do yoga with Jane and her friend Lara in the park after the get-together with her relatives, which thankfully wasn’t the nightmare I was warned it might be.

Sadly, I don't think it's sitting in a gum tree.

Jane also took me to her friend Aiden’s 21st birthday party, which for some reason is just as big of a milestone in Australia as it is in the U.S. even though the drinking age is 18. We didn’t stay long because Jane didn’t know a lot of the people and those she did know were smoking and drinking heavily. I was happy to leave because the smoke was giving me a headache. Jane said that if I couldn’t tolerate that amount, then I probably shouldn’t go to the horse races with her this weekend since it’s much worse there. That’s fine with me because the tickets are really expensive and I wouldn’t feel right letting Jane pay for half of mine even though she offered.
